モデルとなったEMD F7は1949(昭和24)年から1953(昭和28)年にかけて生産された電気式ディーゼル機関車で、NYC(ニューヨーク・セントラル鉄道)で活躍した仕様(ST012-2)は、濃淡の異なるグレーに細い白帯を配した雷を思わせる塗分けで"ライトニング・ストライプス"と呼ばれています。
最小走行半径はR45と大変コンパクトです。
